Our beliefs shape the world around us. The way Thomasin is the only character in the film free from sin... her father? Pride. Her mother? Wrath. Caleb? Lust. Jonas and Mercy? Sloth. AND YET she is the one who is driven toward witchcraft because the world she is a part of deems her untrustworthy as a woman. It is her family’s insistence that she is a witch that ultimately makes it so.

It’s a testament to how great the Safdie brothers are that I enjoyed this as much as I did, despite the fact that it really isn’t my kind of movie. Actually, “enjoyed” is the wrong word because I haven’t felt this stressed while watching a movie since - well - since Good Time. Everything comes to a chaotic head with a pitch perfect ending that genuinely shocked me. One of 2019’s best.
