What needed to work for me was the emotion and it delivers. It really delivers. The whole movie is so simple and the world is easy to drop in to. Krasinski is fantastic and when he roars to save his children, I was pretty much done for. Blunt is probably the stand-out, though. She makes everything she does feel so real. I felt her pain in the amazing sequence where she is about to have the baby and her foot has been pierced and the monster is after her. Great stuff, man. The movie looks great as well, the score is there when you need it and the film was genuinely scary to me. Not that much is needed there when it comes to me, but they did a great job of cross-cutting between situations and ramping up the tension.
