Not much in the way of plot, but a whole lot in the way of character and atmosphere. There's this huge sadness running through Hard Eight. The characters are trying to go somewhere but they're just running in place.
Phillip Baker Hall's understated performance really sets the mood of the film. He's just terrific.
And that last scene. It's like something out of a Raymond Carver story. Just a brief moment that comes and goes so quickly, leaving you thinking.
