    The Raid

A masterpiece of action cinema. You really feel the weight behind every punch, kick, stab, and slam. And that last fight is probably the greatest martial arts sequence in any film. My jaw drops no matter how many times I rewatch it.

    Tropic Thunder

One of my all-time favorite comedies. The hysterical dialogue, the balls to the wall action, the tremendous size and comedic talent of the cast, everything is top-notch.

The superb score, strong writing, and outstanding performance from De Niro make Taxi Driver the best Scorsese film I've seen. Equally grimy and engrossing.

  • Spree

Joe Keery's performance is magnetic and it has a strong premise, but Spree never quite lives up to its potential.

Awesome leads, great action that holds up nearly two decades laster, and Danny Elfman's score is the best of any superhero film. I wish the romance between MJ and Peter had been built up a smidge more, but it works well enough, and that final scene really hammers home the soapy dramatic vibe that Raimi was clearly aiming for.

And surprising absolutely no one, J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson is still THE BEST.

Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights in the Sky Are Stars

A phenomenal retelling of the greatest final arc in anime. Absolutely insane animation, style for days, a stellar soundtrack that pumps you up like crazy, emotional beats that will have you smiling, crying, and cheering, and some of the most awe-inspiring characters and action sequences I've seen in any film.
