My good buddy Steven really fucked me up with this one in ways I wasn’t expecting - genuinely loved this movie a lot, which surprised me a lot. Didn’t need the framing device at all, though.
In terms of comfort/sick day watches, a hyper-deliberate, three-hour Japanese movie is one that isn’t always gonna work. But on the right terrible, awful, no-good, feel-bad day, the weightlessness and gentle nature of Drive My Car is the perfect antidote. This movie is just so brilliant and enchanting, I couldn’t honestly imagine a better companion when trying to fight off a headache and ignore your achey sinuses.
Yes, this is the polar opposite of Fellowship of the Ring, what a bonkers double-feature right?
