real "HIRE 👏 MORE 👏 WOMEN 👏 GUARDS 👏" cinema. not really much better or worse than the median boring, nothing marvel movie of endless expository narrative, incompetent action filmmaking and embarrassing smarmy reference humor. the only thing unique about this is the 90s nostalgia and Girl Power, both of which, no offense, are largely calibrated exactly the same as corporations tweeting about depression. (the goofball sci-fi angle and synth score is unimaginative even by marvel standards.) not even worth bothering to point out the hypocritical anti-imperialism gestures (nothing new for marvel, vaguely center-left gestures towards what ultimately boil down to completely reactionary views on power is their thing) however that nirvana drop definitely among the worst things i'll see this year—that classic kurt cobain ethos we all know and love, "Respect Our Troops". actually think larson isn't terrible honestly, not great by any means but it's not her fault that we' re so deep into the diminishing returns on marvel's whole snark = character thing that we're bound to come out the other side any time now. whatever ghastly form that takes i'll probably still being doing my masochistic film goer due diligence. starting to feel like peter k rosenthal with regards to marvel.
