josh lewis’s review published on Letterboxd:
i can see why people told me this was one of the good ones. the 1st half boasts a strong series of "what if below-average martial arts sequences from a zhang yimou or jackie chan movie were filmed entirely on green screens?" and the 2nd half is the exact same interlocking, exposition zone out nothingness interrupted by the occasional bad reference joke that every single one of these movies is now. glad that some marvel fans might be curious about checking out Hero after this but i knew it wasn't for me basically the second simu liu dropped the "i don't want no trouble" jackie line followed by the hanging out of the moving bus action beat from Police Story but with a 100% cgi exterior of the bus.
and bless tony leung for putting in genuine on-screen effort even when he's clearly just getting the bag but can't lie by the time it hit the finale and he was basically just there to do energy fist punching on a terrible green screen i couldn't help but get a little depressed. this man was in Hard-Boiled and Ashes of Time. anyway, whatever, by marvel standards the fighting is ok.
