Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal ★★★½

It's all in his eyes.

One simply has to look into Riz Ahmed's eyes to see the extraordinary depth of his work in Sound of Metal. The film is a laser-focused soul-searching drama with searing, authentic emotion. Even with tender supporting work from Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci (with Raci in particular moving me to tears in one standout scene), it all comes back to Ahmed's eyes. Eyes that take us on a harrowing journey. A journey guided by a steady hand, faith in performances, and eerily immersive (if anxiety-inducing) sound design. It's the kind of work that makes cinematic experiences unforgettable and that's no small thing for a film that will undoubtedly mean so much to so many.

P.S. Seriously, the way you FEEL the spiraling despair in this is unreal.
