Once again, this list is very likely to change but it's wild enough to likely stay pretty close to how it is.
Original List
Rewatches: Batman Forever
1. "5 Star Sub"
2. I grew up while the American animation industry was really starting to come into its own. Watch an animated movie from the 1990s.
3. And like many American's who grew up in the 90s, my knowledge of fairy tales and legends was dominated by Disney. Watch a film based on the same source material as a renaissance-era (1989-1999) Disney movie.
4. "5 Star Sub"

3. And like many American's who grew up in the 90s, my knowledge of fairy tales and legends was dominated by Disney. Watch a film based on the same source material as a renaissance-era (1989-1999) Disney movie.
4. "5 Star Sub"
5. My dad didn't really know what to do with us when we visited for the first couple of years, so he took us to see a lot of movies . Watch a tween movie released in the early 2000s (and rest assured that I probably saw it in theaters).
6. As a companion to that, watch a high school movie that was released in the late 2000s.
7. In high school, I discovered Olivia Wilde. Watch a film featuring your first celebrity crush, and if you've never had a celebrity crush, watch a film featuring Olivia Wilde.
8. One of my favorite subjects in college was history. Watch a film about a historical event or time period from country in which the film is set.
9. The first time I got into movies was in college. Watch a film featuring a still-living actor/ress who was popular in the first half of the 2010s but isn't around as much anymore. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Andrew Garfield are good examples.
10. Anyway, I went to law school after that. Watch a movie about The Law.
11. To tie off this section, watch a movie from either my Top Tier list or my personal canon.
Act 2: My favorite tropes
12. I really love the American Gothic traditions. Watch a Southern Gothic film. [Explanation] [Examples]
13. My absolute favorite American take on Gothic style is Suburban Gothic. Watch a Suburban Gothic film. [Explanation] [Examples]
14. My absolute favorite trope is estranged siblings who were on opposite sides of a conflict learning to be in each other's lives again. That's a little too specific, so just watch a movie about estranged siblings. [Examples]
15. Another of my favorite character tropes is when the protagonist is a character who, in a more traditional story, would be the villain. Watch a film where the protagonist is viewed as a villain by others in the universe.
16. Another trope I can't get enough of is queer allegories. Sometimes magical powers just make you gay. Watch a queer allegory. [Explanation] [Examples]
17. But sometimes you want to want to see movies with actual queer people in them. Watch a coming of age movie with a queer protagonist. [Examples]
18. I fell absolutely in love with non-linear storytelling after seeing Arrival. Watch a film with a non-linear plot or that plays with time in some other way.
19. My favorite comedy subgenres are mockumentaries and parody biopics. My favorites are What We Do in the Shadows and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Watch a mockumentary or a biopic about someone who doesn't exist.
20. "5 Star Sub"
Act 3: My favorite technical aspects
21. When you play a string instrument, you grow up loving Hans Zimmer the way most music nerd kids love John Williams. I knew the score for Pirates of the Caribbean long before I knew Star Wars or Jurassic Park or Jaws. Watch a film scored by Hans Zimmer.
22. Lots of other composers write incredible scores with lots of strings instruments as well. Watch a strings-heavy score written by someone other than Hans Zimmer. [Examples]
23. Indie animated movies have trouble getting the kind of acclaim that live action animated movies get. Watch a film that's been nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Feature - Independent
24. Between stop-motion, watercolors, the comic-esque animation from Spider Verse, and the hybrid pioneered in Paperman, there's a lot of really cool animation techniques out there. Watch a movie that uses an animation technique that isn't standard 2D or 3D animation.
25. One of the most fun things about genre films is the potential for really inventive, stylized settings. Watch a genre film that's been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Production Design.
26. Nothing sticks in my mind like a really cool shot from a movie. Watch a genre film that's been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
27. A lot of the most acclaimed adapted screenplays are based on books, but movies are adapted from all kinds of things. Watch a movie that is adapted from something other than a book.
28. Finally, not really a technical category, but it doesn't fit anywhere else either. It's always good to broaden your horizons, so watch a film in a language you've never seen a film in before. If that doesn't work for some reason, watch a film from a country you've never seen a film from before.
