Road to My End of the Decade List - Movie #10
Sex addiction, misogyny, and a fear of commitment find a face in Michael Fassbender's Brandon. Each is a layer deeper in his psyche than the last, each used to cover up the one that follows. Steve McQueen's direction is undeniably great. Fassbender's performance is riveting and nuanced. The bluish-greys, long takes, and the multitude of sex scenes build up the tone and themes. It's not only very entertaining, it's also a deeply personal character study, and sometimes uncomfortably so. If I had to make a complaint, I'd say maybe there are too many sex scenes or they're too long, but at least they build character, tone, and themes. Overall, good shit. Steve McQueen has yet to let me down, and I can't imagine Hunger or Widows letting me down.
