The Tale of the Princess Kaguya ★★★★½

I'm almost speechless. I don't know if I can quite put this into words. Isao Takahata has proven for over thirty years that he is one of the most unique and original voices in animation. His ability to create raw emotion and beauty through the simplicity of his films never fails to astound me, and this film is no exception to his talents. On a visual level, it's one of the most stunning films I've ever seen. In terms of the animation, it's certainly Studio Ghibli's most interesting and creative, if not its most beautiful, film. And, beyond that, it offers unique, subtle, and poetic insight into the human experience, providing something I've never really gotten with any film I've seen before. I felt everything that the titular character felt - all the joy, all the pain, all the heartache. I saw all the beauty she did, looking at the world with new eyes as she did. I was close to tears for the entirety of the film's run-time. It's an absolutely astounding accomplishment and has given me one of the best experiences I've ever had.
