Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. ★★★★

Fascinating portrait of an artist from the early days of finding herself to finding popularity and then fighting the expectations of culture’s idea of “pop star” and her struggle to re-define it to suit her. Basically, the story of a young woman fighting the expectations of a culture that wants women to be a certain way and who then reject her when she doesn’t fit the mold.

I found it completely engrossing and the intimate footage of her before she even wanted to be a musician provides a fascinating insight into what went into the creation of the musician. Great stuff.
