I'm not going to deny the opinions of those who despise this film, or really Refn's resume as a whole, but I will say that Only God Forgives is one of the most breathtaking and beautifully brutal films of the century. Ryan Gosling speaks seventeen lines, but the film isn't about him. It's more about his complex, and his attempts to fight God. It's clear from Refn's writing and direction that this is a very personal film to him, and I appreciate him for not giving in to anyone else's vision but his own.
