    Well, this was absolutely what I needed this afternoon.

    A subversive western that is actually subversive--unlike the usual westerns labeled subversive, which tend to just be the same old plot and tropes, but now with excessive violence and racism and rape for "realism."

    Wow. Aronofsky. Yeah. I, too, have read the book of Genesis. However, no one gave me millions of dollars to make a shallow, clunky, unoriginal allegory of it.

    This wasn't transgressive or statement-making art.

    This was somehow a half-attempted critique of God (whoa! Is He evil like the devil?! How original.) and organized religion. Yet, it followed the very script of patriarchal, misogynistic interpretations of Genesis exactly. The moment Eve showed up in guise of Michelle Pfeiffer as a seductrous…
