Under the Silver Lake ★★

Fun enough, and I found its glimpses of horror super effective. Ultimately, though, it's indulgent to the point of exasperation and just a bit hollow. The film is way too in love with its cryptic mythology to make an intelligent commentary on it; it's one of those films that are so desperate to get the 'cult movie' stamp that the basics of storytelling get left behind somewhere. Also: making your film super male-gazey to critique the male gaze…. I mean yeah, fine I guess, though that’s been done to death. But maybe give your female characters - even one! - something resembling a ... character? ("That's the point!" yell the incels at the back.)
