“We are Sex Bob-Omb and we are here to watch Scott Pilgrim kick your teeth in!”
Shaun of the Dead is in my top 10 favourites of all-time, Baby Driver was a super-entertaining action film and the whole Cornetto Trilogy is a comedic triumph so my fifth Edgar Wright flick had promised so much. I think I didn’t love this one due to my lack of knowledge of gaming/pop culture references as there were tons of easter eggs hidden in plain sight throughout. Michael Cera is a brilliant lead whilst creative cameos from Evans, Schwartzmann, Franco etc. were highlights. The comedy is classic Wright; I admit I did laugh out loud a lot more than I expected. Mary Elizabeth Winstead should stick to grimy thrillers in John Goodman’s basement though (obviously this came out before 10 Cloverfield Lane, but still). Bursting at the seams with great sound, camerawork and visual comedy, this is a more-than-commendable feature from one of my favourite filmmakers... but I think he should keep it British!
