Matt Curione’s review published on Letterboxd:
Connected with Greta Gerwig's debut feature on a personal level that I didn't expect.
Set during the high school senior year of 02-03, when I was in fact a high school senior preparing to graduate and dealing with my life the best I could, Lady Bird is a coming of age story that isn't all roses, just like real life. Ronan is an absolute master and in time is bound to be a household name. As for the rest of the cast? There's not a bad performance to be found, everyone brings their A-game and the picture succeeds because of them. That's not to say the movie would falter otherwise, as Gerwig knocks it out of the park with Lady Bird, she has an assured eye and a sense of character that feels fresh and real.
Also we really don't give Laurie Metcalf enough credit, she's a bedrock and gives one of the best performances of 2017. You feel for her character and understand what she's going through. As for Lucas Hedges? His character hit me the hardest, since in high school I went through his exact situation. A great young actor who's going to be around for a long time and bless him for it.
One of the best films of the year, Lady Bird is something special.
