I only hesitate to call The Handmaiden my favorite film of the 2010s because I really don’t want to come across as horny online, but this is my favorite film of the last decade. Impeccable costume and production design. Park may be the most stylish director working. All the lurid fun of De Palma’s erotic thrillers and Park’s earlier, gorier films, but so much heart. You can almost forget this is a Park film until the torture scene at the end with a fucking octopus looming in the background. And I love that Hideko and Sookee get a James Bond ending, having sex on a ship as it sails into the mist.
The Handmaiden rules, but you know what else rules? The trailer for The Handmaiden.
