The American Friend

The American Friend ★★★★

Leave it to Wim Wenders to direct maybe the only incarnation of Tom Ripley that actually seems to show the reverberations of his manipulations and violence. It takes Wenders’ empathetic eye and the utterly absurd malevolence of Dennis Hopper to show Ripley not as an enigmatic sociopath, but a truly disturbed man whose violence begets its own bizarre version of pain on all those in his orbit.
