Cruella ★★

This is a messy mish-mash of genres, tropes, and weird character twists. The protagonist is supposed to be born with a specific personality but it gets fueled by a revenge motivation that comes out of nowhere; this, instead of building up a truly selfish character that will eventually become a villain. They even try to hint at a romantic aspect of the story! I can bare the origin story just fine, but it’s a bit of a cheat to make it as a nature thing, instead of the frustrating build-up of a person that loses her way. That would have been a much more interesting story—a more meaningful “character study,” if you will (the most character you can get out of Cruella, that is.)

Also, I am calling out the director only for using the most confusing camera movements and angles in most of the supposedly important scenes. I just didn’t know where to look! And don’t get me started of the obnoxious, endless selection of songs.

Costumes and performances are good.
