I'm sorry to disappoint the cynics, but this is a pretty damn good horror film. The monster is really well-realized in both a psychological and physical way; the characters are interesting and reminded me a lot of spending time with my own friends; and the way they meshed the physical forest with the other scenes from the outside world was pretty damn awesome.
The surrealism of the dream sequences is really trippy, and the sound design is astonishing.
One issue I have with the film is that I feel like it should have done on for an extra 20 minutes. I just wanted something more at the end.
It also felt kind of shitty that the dude who was a complete PoS was the one who survived too, so the film might have been better off just killing everyone or maybe letting one more of the guys get out by the end.Or really give him something to actually fight for other than saving his own life, to reconcile what happens early on in the film.
