Trevor Allen’s review published on Letterboxd:
“We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster than we should that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But to feel nothing so as not to feel anything - what a waste!”
I was so afraid of not loving this as much my second time, but then Oliver starts dancing to "Love My Way" by The Psychedelic Furs, and I knew this film was something just so very dear to me, and special in every way. This is a brilliant film that not only shows a magnificent story, but it shows us the fundamentals of growing up and evolving as people. Life isn't life without love and happiness; life isn't life without sorrow and pain. Elio and Oliver dare each other to desire the other, and this understated battle sparks a beautiful friendship. If it were up to me, fuck it, give everyone in this damn movie an award. Like, right now.
