Barbie 2023
The themes of Gerwig’s other films have a place in this film, but the primary reason I loved it is because it’s a clear, single-minded vision from an actual artist, brought to life on the big screen and made for the masses. Unpretentious, nostalgic, but still says something and means it! Everyone in it wants to be there! All the actors are wonderful, you can feel Gerwig’s hand in all of it and her collaborative, positive nature shines through. It’s just so wonderful.

Encanto 2021
This was fun and sweet, and I will say that my students love it, which bumps it up a bit, hearing them sing the songs in the hallways. Driven by the music, I think the story is a bit quick and falls flat in the middle. The payoff is very sweet, but like Frozen, it's a slow slog to a quick finish.
