There are bouts of brilliance here. The humor contrasted with the naturalist drama reminded me of early William Inge when he was trying to find his voice. Particularly I love the rebellion scene during the ball. The mirror scene with Jenny was fantastic as well.
Bergman's command of the camera starts here too. Obviously it became fully formed once he started collaborating with Sven Nykvist.
The acting is pretty solid. It's easy to see the folks who were comfortable with the camera. Nelly and Jenny were particularly fantastic and natural.
