Yeah, Llewyn is a pain in the ass and brings most of his own misery upon himself, but this is not just a film about being "stuck" going in circles, either. It's also about grief (which, of course, often feels like going in circles), and at the end of the movie, despite the fact Llewyn is still broke and without much of a career...well, it feels like he's actually found some closure, some relief. Not since ON THE WATERFRONT has a film ended with the main character getting beat up and made it feel like such a victory.
It's a happy ending, is what I'm saying.
