There are the greats of Hong Kong Cinema, and then there's Wong Jing. But as I was watching him shit in a bidet, as a bloody hand reaches up to grab his thigh, I couldn't help but feel that he should be up there in the pantheon as well. Just look at this beauty! He kept science fiction films in theaters when no one else would give them a shot. And he always, no matter what, went for every cheap…

What a treat that this was set at the Field Museum and not the American Museum of Natural History as it was written in the book! I'm a big Natural History museum fan, I go to them whenever I find one, and I truly believe the Field is one of the best in the world, a peer institution to the ones in New York, London, and Paris (The Smithsonian doesn't make the cut unless you combine more than just the…

Couldn't find a single moment of the easy charm of its predecessor, a torturous sequel that circles a number of jokes but never quite hits any of them. They can't even commit to the overarching theme: where the original is about her dolling up and being more feminine, the sequel clearly intends to have her discovering herself again, but after a three second scene in which she's back in her FBI pants she needs to go undercover at a drag…

Nothing says I'm stuck on an airplane for hours and need to watch something - anything - that they've got in their inflight entertainment more than Sandra Bullock. There's always a couple of her films in the list and she is very watchable, and usually in just the kind of movie you don't need to see on a big screen. This one is something of a classic, and though I'm sure I've seen it before, I didn't remember any of it. The entire cast is just superb. Michael Caine as her stylist is a special treat. Very sweet.

This isn't a movie. This is more like a visual album. Each murder is a track, "Bats", "Locusts", and so on, the Ten Plagues of Egypt, re-imagined in the style of a murderous Batman or Avengers TV episode. Vincent Price leads his mechanical band on the organ. The end credits might clue you in on who to root for and who is just part of the ensemble, organized into "Interested Parties", "The Law", "The Victims", "The Girl" (the wonderfully enigmatic…

This movie is a gift. A gift of childhood where nothing is perfect, but it doesn't have to be. Where a crumbling broken down house is an adventure to clean. Where you can find acorns and plant them and watch to see if they grow. Where nature is frightening, with huge teeth and claws, but ultimately welcoming and warm and sustaining. Where parents are sick, working, struggling to make ends meet, but provide a loving home as best they can.…
