There are several moments/shots in this movie that seem dialed up to make fans of TOS ruin their denim, but, having never seen even one second of that, I can't tell if it's overly fan service-y or not. I will say that I was expecting this to try to compete more with Star Wars in terms of its adventure elements, but this is much headier and slow-moving than that. Even though the effects and tech have aged questionably, there are still some neat visuals and enough intrigue, at least initially, to make it a fine watch.
