Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★½

Judas and the Black Messiah is just outstanding. Director Shaka King takes one of the most important moments in history that could've easily feel sentimental and aimless in the hands of a less cautious director. While I wouldn't call it a Fred Hampton biopic and more of a look at how corrupt the justice system was (and still is), it's relevant and condemnatory. Not only the filmmaking across the board is phenomenal, but all the performances are fantastic and never once they over-the-top or phoned in. Daniel Kaluuya deserves all the praise and awards that's given to him. The way he talks in a gentle manner to his love ones is just as majestic as the way he commands a room of hundreds of people. However, Lakeith Stanfield is just as great and continues to show how much range he has as an actor. Jesse Plemons is also great here as a cowardly FBI agent. For me, Dominique Fishback gives my favorite performance of the movie. She gives a lot of geniality and devastation that's flawlessly composed every time she steps on screen. It did feel a bit long though. Nevertheless, it's still an impressive achievement for everyone involved. It's a really must see.
