This was my 3rd or 4th 4Chan/weird internet people documentary in the last year and I don't know why I do it to myself.
There was a moment when I was like this is filmed in such a way that they're the heroes and then I realized much like that one Flat Earther doc, it isn't. By simply letting them talk long enough you'll eventually realize oh nah, they're not the kind of people you want to take seriously in the slightest.
I'm tickled that she had a Black daughter on the sneak (only because both daughters had the same parents).
One of a couple things could have happened:
1. It was colorblind casting; which is dope.
2. Jillian Shae Spaeder just didn't say anything; which is dope. Get your money girl.
I'd die on the hill that this masterpiece is one of the greatest movies ever. Little Akeelah hassling uppity Dr. Larabee is one of the most genuine relationships in cinema. The only thing more pure than this movie is the fact that writer/director Doug Atchison fought tooth and nail to make sure Dr. Larabee wasn't changed to a white character like studios wanted because it was important that he be from the same neighborhood as, and look like, Akeelah. It's definitely top tier Inspirational/Feel-good/Black Girl Magic and you should watch it. If you've seen it, go watch it again.
I've been thinking about this every waking minute for 2 whole days. It was truly a masterpiece and it got to me deep. Real deep.
