    John Wick: Chapter 4

Well that settles that, no one else gets to use the term 'symphony of violence' other than Mr. Wick. I've never laughed so much at just the sheer ingenuity of action scenes. And more impressively, how the film is able to still convey serious impact and injury when it wants to, despite the fact that Wick is a character that has fallen off buildings, been hit by multiple cars, and been shot and stabbed too many times to count.

Delighted my first 2023 movie was something this fun. A horror comedy that doesn't let its own inherent ridiculousness be its sole driving force. Gemma (Allison Williams) is a career-focused inventor working for a toy company. We see her latest creation "Purrpetual Petz" in an ad that opens the film. It's a mass of fur with two huge eyes that promises to live longer than you will. That's the film condensed to a toy commercial, garishly a satire with just…

I hesitate to call 'Ganja & Hess' blaxploitation just because it seems so distinct from the brunt of the genre, but for that reason I'm having trouble categorizing it at all. I mean, if you hear "blaxploitation vampire", your immediate thought is going to be 'Blacula', not an expressionistic, somber drama about addiction.

The film is in the same vein as George Romero's recently-unearthed 'The Amusement Park', a low-budget effort that the financers just didn't know what to do with when…

    Huesera: The Bone Woman

Valeria (Natalia Solián) prays to the Virgin of Guadalupe for a child, she follows all of the recommendations to ensure she gets pregnant. Still she's reticent regarding the prospect of motherhood, even as her prayers are answered. She seems to have everything sorter, her doting husband Raul (Alfonso Dosal) is supportive, they share a genuine love and a home awaiting a child. 'Huesera' is not the first horror film to begin with an idealistic family but these opening scenes managed…

I hadn't seen 'Inception' since theatres, one of only two Nolan films that I've seen theatrically, and only because my dad wanted to see it. Funny only because it's so against his taste, too high concept to the point that he'll still occasionally mention how much he disliked watching it. It's his touchstone whenever a movie goes just a bit over his head. It's certainly not the kind of film you can sell with a short sentence.

    It's a film…

So I've been rewatching Nolan's filmography in anticipation of 'Oppenheimer' and my feelings about the bulk of his work have sustained. I rolled my eyes through my first viewing of 'Interstellar' and this time around felt as if I ran the gamut of human emotions. I think it owes to the film's principle that love is a powerful force that we can't hope to conceive of fully. It's honestly still ridiculous in its initial context, heart-wrenching and endearing but also…
