Apt Pupil

Apt Pupil ★★

Adapted from a Stephen King story in the collection of novellas Different Seasons, this is the story of high school student Todd Bowden recognizing an old man as a Nazi in hiding. Instead of exposing the fugitive of WWII, he embraces the man's past in a disturbing turn of events.

I remember reading this story in the 80s and being utterly chilled to the bone on the final page. This film brought me back to the story, but comes up short. I was right there until the ending because that is the most horrific part of the story. Alas, it is sanitized in the ending for this film. It's been years since I first watched the film and was reminded how much I liked it -- until the ending. Sigh. This is one of those cases where an ending can ruin the rest. Read the horrifying novella instead.
