Todd Russell’s review published on Letterboxd:
"I didn't come here to rescue Rambo from you. I came here to rescue you from him." - Colonel Sam Trautman
Based on the novel by David Morrell, Sylvester Stallone plays Vietnam vet John Rambo returning to try and catch up with an old military buddy only to run into an overzealous small town police force that treats him like a drifter and vagrant. Rambo quickly shows his skills in the woods and how he is the law in the wild.
If you haven't seen this before, it's the must see in the franchise. The newest one, perhaps the final one, Rambo: Last Blood comes out this week that I wrote this review. I own this one streaming through Amazon Prime videos and watch it a couple times a year.
This one has the most character depth and actually goes against the book's ending in order to allow the franchise to continue (I took a half star away for not following the book ending and thus seemingly dooming future Rambo films to a schtick of graphic violence). The sequels to date have been more revenge-flick action and thin on further character development, this one you actually feel the most compassion for what happened to the soldier John Rambo, particularly in the final scene. For action fans, this film is the mecca. Highly rewatchable and recommended.
