I had a good time watching "The Untouchables," but it's less than the sum of its parts. Costner, Connery, and Garcia are great. De Palma directs a great pulpy action movie with some real artistic flair. Mamet's script treats the themes (ethics of fighting unethical people, working within a corrupt system as a good guy, being handsome) really well and has a lot of great moments. Ennio Morricone is Having A Great Time. But what is this movie? Is it…

You ever see one of those movies that's so good that you don't know how to explain it? I just love this movie. While not a perfect comparison, the strengths of this movie remind me a lot of the strengths of Vertigo: the themes of the story are reinforced through complementary setting and cinematography. By the time the strings of the knot start to tighten, you've been primed from every direction to think, "Oh! OH!" That requires a lot of coordination from a lot of motivated and smart people, and I really appreciate it.

Ida Lupino does a great job directing, but the lack of any real star appeal or vivid characterization of the main three characters leaves something strong to be desired. It's hard to make a nihilist noir movie without a romance or cool persona to grab onto, and this movie hits the wall in that regard.
