Jane Fonda as Barbarella might be the sexiest role of all time. The opening credit sequence immediately draws you in and sets the tone of the film. It's so progressive that I am shocked that this film came out when it did. At the same time it feels so incredibly 60s.
Our heroine is such a strong character that everyone else, despite some very good performances, falls into after thought territory. It's no surprise that Jane Fonda went on to have such a long career.
The sets, costumes, and visual effects are way ahead of their time. Barbarella was clearly a key source of inspiration for The Fifth Element, among other sci-fi films. It's not for everyone, but if you appreciate originality and forward thinking cinema then this one is for you.
