I made the mistake of watching the movie thirty minutes after finishing Jeff Vandermeer's book, so I'm probably rating it a little lower than if my imagination wasn't still wild on its own ideas.

Many of my favourite parts of the novel don't even see the light of day (or, phosphorescent glow of mutated human cells) but as I can't begin to imagine how the majority of those scenes would have been shot I'll give Garland a free pass.

It really is too bad that this didn't make it to the cinema in the UK. That audio would have been over the top.

Very nearly gave up on this early on but ended up sticking around and enjoying the rest of the ride. Maybe it was because my brain recalibrated to circumvent the Blade Runner fanfic, or that the worst of the characters had reduced screen time as the film progressed, or simply because I was happy to watch anything that wasn't The Cloverfield Paradox again.

No idea what was going on with the endless Moon Cinematic Universe (Mooniverse?) nods. I half expected Jones himself to pop up and do a wink to the camera every time Lunar Industries appeared in a shot.

    Unexpectedly good.

    Triumph of the Will

Shouting and cheering and marching and shouting and marching and cheering. For two hours. The mind is fascinated, but numb.

This is the world's most terrifying meditation video.
