This is not going to be much of a review for the film and more of a review on the state of Foreign cinema 2018 from a North American pov.
At the beginning of the year, I remember wondering what were the highlights of French cinema in 2018. In a year with no favourite for the foreign language Oscar (not to mention that the film representing France was not a great choice), it was hard to think of many films from France that year. Pretty much all I could think of was "Climax". But this is French cinema, shouldn't there be more great films to come out of the country that gave us the fucking New Wave?
Earlier this year…
13 April 2020 : I began hating this but I’m so glad I kept watching. It deals with questions of toxic masculinity, sex work, love, attitudes towards people within the lgbtq community, the prison system, parent-child relationships and feminism all intertwined in such an understated and human way
edit from september 2023 wow little 2019 me was very enthusiastic about this i should rewatch lol
Recently released from juvenile reformatory, Zachary returns to the streets of Marseille looking to make a living selling drugs. Abandoned by his family, without the support he expected from his friends and avoiding the system, he meets Shéhérazade, a young prostitute with whom he establishes a relationship. Things seem to be on course at first, but Zach's reckless, impulsive and violent behaviour will soon take its toll on him and those around him forcing him to take responsibility for his actions.
Shéhérazade shows an emerging romance between two lost souls; a relationship of mutual dependence that seems to be the only glimmer of hope in a miserable environment and from which there seems to be no way out. Jean-Bernard Marlin,…
