A Dr. Fauci lookalike goes undercover at a nursing home. But there are cameras there filming his every move. 🤷🏼♀️ It’s hard to overcome this bizarre setup. Yes, there are moments of sweetness and sadness, but it just felt unnecessarily voyeuristic intruding into the private, lonely moments of these elderly individuals, many of whom surely weren’t able to provide their own consent.
The performance by Andra Day was excellent. The rest of the movie was not. Several flashes of potential end up being woven together in a way that unfortunately robs the film of real depth. Given the wealth of material in Billie Holiday’s life story, it’s a shame it feels wasted in this film.
I feel like I’ve seen this frontier movie a hundred times. The main characters [Tom Hanks and a young orphan girl] make a treacherous journey [across Texas in 1870], battling numerous obstacles along the way [no spoilers, but generally bad guys and the elements]. Add in a few eye-roll inducing lines of dialogue and unbelievable scenarios. The film still gets nominated for some awards because it’s an period film. Wash, rinse, repeat.
