Todd Gaines’s review published on Letterboxd:
Chadwick Boseman’s monologues have Oscar written all over them. Viola Davis gives it everything and then some as the legendary Ma Rainey. Here’s a film that takes place in mostly one location, and it is very dialogue heavy. It also packs a lot of tension, and it is definitely hot up in the recording studio.
I believe Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is a must see film. The music is incredible, and the directing is first class. It doesn’t matter if you’re into action or arthouse drama, please let it be your jam.
