Top Ten 2014

I wasn't blown away by many films in 2014, but there were a few that felt like true "boundary pushers". Some, like my #1, seemed as unique as anything I've seen this decade. Others, like BOYHOOD (which just missed my top 10), is highly admirable for it's time-boundary-pushing but didn't quite have the lasting impact on me that it did for others. I'd also argue that NIGHTCRAWLER pushes the boundary of how detestable a protagonist can be, especially one that (spoiler alert) never really gets his comeuppance. Huge credit must go to Jake Gyllenhaal for pulling that off.

NIGHTCRAWLER is also unique for me in that it, along GONE GIRL and even EDGE OF TOMORROW, felt like a masterwork of…
