Die Ehe der Maria Braun spielt in vielerlei Hinsicht nicht mit der filmischen Form und ist doch in vielerlei Hinsicht äußerst faszinierend. Erstens setzt sich der Film intensiv mit dem Überleben in der schlimmsten Zeit der deutschen Geschichte auseinander—dem Zweiten Weltkrieg—,aber auch darüber hinaus berührt der Film die Abhärtung der Seele, nachdem eine düstere Realität unaufhörlich an ihr zerrt und sie zermalmt. Passages from James Joyce's Finnegans Wake 1967
I adore Finnegans Wake, it is an infinite source of joy and love from me as I am intrigued by Joyce‘s imaginative, delectable prose that is layered with multilingual entendres that break my mind. Mary Ellen Bute‘s „adaptation“ keeps the general feel or lack of understanding but, I think the lack of proper mixing and true experimentation with the form, it does not achieve the level required for this illustrious work.
