It could have been so much better. What should have been the next Lord of the Rings was instead more like the Golden Compass. The cast is fine (with Idris Elba especially standing out), but the film's story is just underwhelming. It does not adapt the books, instead taking the characters and concept in a new direction, which is fine, but the new story isn't as interesting. Also, it's only 95 minutes. That may not seem like a big issue,…
"Robocop" is really great. It feels like a classic comic book throughout. Robocop is an awesome hero, with a cool origin and amazing design. The action is bloody and over-the-top, but it fits in well with this flashy vision of the future. The effects are also impressive, especially with the ED-209. The story is a clever satire of American culture of the 1980s, and feels like something from the pen of Frank Miller (ironic, since he went on to write the screenplays for the sequels). Overall, this is one of best action films of its decade. It's smart, entertaining, and pleasing to the eye.
