Tom dePerto’s review published on Letterboxd:
Surprisingly more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be.
Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway are, of course, both very charismatic and talented actors, but their chemistry here is remarkable. The film pretty much relies on their mentor/mentoree relation, and they never let the film slow down at any point. I really liked the scenes in the office set too, Nancy Meyers achieved them wonderfully.
Why the low score then? Well, regardless of how fun and interesting this movie is, it's still a run-of-the-mill comedy. I didn't think it was overlong (surprisingly, since it's 2 hours long), but it's too predictable, as the plot plays out exactly as you think it's going to, and the characters are too generic. Unpredictability isn't exactly what I should expect from a light comedy like this, but it's still pretty formulaic. It's one of those films that I was really into while it was playing, but when the credits started to roll, suddenly indifference took over me and I didn't feel anything towards the film anymore.
It's worth watching for the leads and the entertainment though.
