I don’t want to slander the legacy of Chadwick Boseman, so I’m thankful I’m able to say his performance in this was outstanding and in general I think it’s the highlight, although some credit must be given to the directing and for what it has to say about racial relations, which is an extremely popular topic in big award contenders, if you haven’t noticed. Almost equally popular is the big dumb musical piece, the likes of which I rarely get into. Worse are movies adapted from plays, for me. I’ve said this a million times and I guess I’ll have to say it a million more. They’re different mediums, and if you don’t do something interesting and innovative then something is definitely going to be lost in adaptation. I definitely wouldn’t call it worthy of a Best Picture nomination, but if it wins Chadwick Boseman a posthumous Oscar it will have been worth it.
