Stevie’s review published on Letterboxd:
Rather shocking that I hadn’t seen this one, partly because I have memories of watching At World’s End and On Stranger Tides, and partly because I know that at least some people see it as a modern classic. And yeah, I thought this was really pretty good, if not great at all. Not even because there were a lot of aspects of the film I loved and others brought it down, nor was it the other way around. This is just front to back a pretty good movie. The screenplay is alright. It’s a fairly simple story, though I wanted something a little more complex. The cast is stacked with talented people who do good jobs, though I can only hope the characters are fleshed out further and better in the second film. The directing is, that’s right, perfectly fine. Look, I don’t know what to tell you, outside of it being a satisfying little film that should appeal in some way or another to audience members of all ages, nothing here sticks out to me as particularly memorable. But it is satisfying for the record, and if I’m just supposed to leave the film unopposed to throwing it on again in the future I guess that’s enough.
Fucked Up Shit Ville Score: 3/10
