This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

A government programme to send convicts into space on suicide science mission? Fine, I can roll with that. But I found it hard to believe in the power dynamics necessary to effectively scaffold any tension.

Lots of potentially interesting ideas to explore (the fuck box, the dog ship, raising a child alone in space) and I feel like it kinda chickened out on all of em.

  • Fugue

    Fugue

    ★★½

Too crisp, cold and spare for my liking, both visually and in its performances. This is compounded by it being set in a fancy but soulless modern house in the middle of nowhere.

There's a scene at the midway point in a bar, as a pop song interrupts the otherwise threadbare soundtrack, where some sort of feeling emerged, but sadly it wasn't long before we return to whispered monotone in high-end kitchens.

    Adore that poster though!

the more conventional scenes didn't really hold up, but the ocean stuff was absolutely mesmerising.

Sweet and odd in equal measure, while just about managing not to veer into abject sentimentalism. Big props to the most wholesome screen biker gang of all time and an outrageously hot Sam Elliott.

This absolutely floored me. Had no idea where it was headed from one scene to the next. Didn't care for the final scene, but man, what a trip!

Profoundly odd, unexpectedly funny and utterly transcendental.

Bogdanovich getting wasted and falling asleep next to Karloff was funny as hell.

Kinda feel like Haneke straight ripped the psychotic boy-next-door archetype from this for Funny Games.
