I’m not even going to lie to you, the reason I put this off for so long was the running time. It’s quite a commitment and very rarely do I come home from work, make dinner for my spouse, take care of three demanding pets who need food, medicine, and love, and then think “NOW is a great time to bust out a 2.5 hour movie”, but hey I finally did it. And it’s not like I didn’t think I would enjoy it, it’s just a major commitment, especially for someone who likes to get as much sleep as humanly possible!
But I’m glad I finally forced myself to commit to it because wow is it a great movie. I went in expecting a Wicker Man vibe and what I got was a Two Thousand Maniacs vibe with some of the same dark humor and I loved it. And speaking of dark, this shit is dark. Somehow, in spite of all of the mega bright daylight scenes and onslaught of colors, this manages to still be dark as fuck and that’s an impressive feat. A feat my hat goes all the way off to.
The cast does a great job, especially Florence Pugh. At the beginning of the movie I kinda wanted to punch her in the face for whining so much, but then you learn more about her and you see what a shit deal she has and you really just want to hold and protect her, especially with such a godawful piece of shit boyfriend. Speaking of, I will never complain about getting to see ginger Jack Reynor running around with his cock flopping all about. C’mon, you knew I was going to mention it, right??
At this point, I still think I like Hereditary a bit better possibly just for the literal darkness, but that could easily change after another viewing. I can really see this one growing on me and I can’t wait to see what Aster comes up with next.
Side note: anyone else made totally uncomfortable by the flowers on her wreath that kept opening and closing??
