    Based off of the reviews, I did not expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did. I think it helps that I'm a big fan of both Jane Austen and Game of Thrones, so the blend of a comedy of manners with horror and AU history (not to mention some familiar, excellent actors) was more charming than off-putting.

    The Ballad of Narayama


    I have attended Kabuki performances, and enjoyed them, but I found the music and style of singing too harsh and staccato for this film. I struggled with the false background, and spent too much time wondering if the plants in the foreground were also fake. It is certainly a slow film.
    The lighting was what brought me around to false background, as it allowed for brilliant contrasts- blazing sunsets while the house glowed an ominous green through the paper screens.…

    If you are unfamiliar with the story of Cinderella, which I doubt, this will contain spoilers. A film of great beauty but little substance.
