Scream ★★★

Plenty of fun, bloody, and has decent targets to weaponize its satirization at, but also pretty uniformly the worst Scream sequel that’s sorely missing Craven’s adept hand at blending carnage and character, and his smart contextualization of meta-ness within the story. Sure, there’s commentary about elevated horror, legacy sequels, and toxic fandoms, but it’s up for debate how well any of those are implemented into this as an actual movie. Also the new kids mostly suck. That said, it’s decently directed with a couple of good sequences and some gags that did feel inspired. It was clearly made with reverence which I appreciated; this isn’t a pure cash-in. But by the end of the runtime I was mostly feeling like the Scream franchise has largely run out of gas.
