Coming Home

Coming Home ★★★½

Pretty straightforward in its desire to be a low-key correction to Zhang's period of lush excess and failed international outreach (the Blood Simple remake and whatever that Bale thing was). And it works, because Gong Li absolutely owns this thing from front to back, managing to take what is a relatively poorly established affliction (for a while there, it seems like it is a form of Alzheimer's, but it becomes a little too contrived in order to keep the story afloat) and wringing all possible emotion from it.
