    One of a handful of Studio Ghibli films I have seen before, but it had been a long time. Always bitter sweet when Phil Hartman pops up in something. Comfy laidback exploration of growth, boundaries, motivation, balance, self care, and so on.

    Not nearly as good as Paulie released the same year but I have room in my heart for more than 1 wise-cracking parrot movie from 1998. Unlike Paulie this film has buried pirate treasure and Australian accents. Within the first 10 minutes of the film the parrot shits on someones face and the kid does a skateboard trick over a dog.     Visualize vast wilderness! Actualize industrial collapse! Power to the Tanuki Liberation Front!

    Standard Studio Ghibli countryside nature vs city civilization message and I loved every minute of it. At first I did not really like the cutesy anthropomorphic characterization of the tanuki but the design style grew on me and the film also incorporated many scenes where they were drawn much more authentically and a huge focus of the film is the tanuki transforming into other objects entirely.
